Authentic Algarve

The Algarve region of Portugal is one of Europe’s best kept secrets. Not as known to US culinary travelers as many coastal destinations in the rest of Europe, it nonetheless boasts stunning beaches, a fantastic climate, and wonderful gastronomy that have made it a top destination for Europeans looking for Portugal food tours. American travelers have also been discovering it in recent years, and Portugal is one of the fastest growing destinations among travelers worldwide, both because of all that the country has to offer on a culinary vacation in Portugal in terms of history, culture, gastronomy, and comfort, but also for the friendly and unpretentious people.
It’s no wonder so many choose the Algarve for their culinary vacation in Portugal. It is the westernmost part of continental Europe (?), making it seem as though you are on the edge of the Earth. The stunning beached are obvious, but as the “gateway to Europe” this important coastal region played a major role in European exploration, the cultural traces of which can be found in local towns you will visit on your Portugal food tour.
The climate of the Algarve is one of the best in Europe, with long summers and mild winters providing the necessary conditions for beautiful natural landscapes and abundant produce that you will explore in your Portugal cooking classes featuring the local gastronomy. Fish and seafood, of course, abound in the nearby waters of the Atlantic, but there are other culinary surprises in store for you on your food and wine tour of Portugal as you learn about both traditional and contemporary Portuguese food.
This unique and authentic culinary tour of Portugal will introduce you to the real Algarve as you explore the salt flats, meet the local artisan producers, and travel with the fishermen to an undiscovered beach where you will learn about local life.
Come with us to the Algarve on a Portugal food tour and experience the best of Portugal.

The chef will teach you how to make a traditional Cataplana, a name which signifies both the seafood dish as well as the unique cooking vessle in which it is cooked. Start with a visit to the local market and then head to the hotel restaurant for the class. You will also prepare a starter and dessert.

- In the afternoon head to the “salinas,” or the salt flats. The Algarve is an important salt-producing region, including the famous “fleur de sel.” The sea salt collected is 100% natural. Visit the salt pans and try your hand at collecting salt under the supervision of a professional saltman.
- Dinner on your own and overnight.
Day Three
- After breakfast enjoy your next cooking class. The chef will first accompany you to a local producer of Portuguese cheese and sausages, then head back to the hotel restaurant to cook with the goat cheese and “chourizo” you have purchased. - Back to the hotel and time to relax.
- Dinner on your own and overnight.
Day Four
- Breakfast and then visit the local tuna museum in a nearby village with your chef to learn about the history of tuna and its importance to the economy and the gastronomy of the Algarve.
