Barcelona – Boqueria Market Visit and Cooking Lesson

Experience the true Catalan cuisine by starting with a visit to the source: Barcelona’s Boqueria market. Once a traveling market, it is today located on a pedestrian-only street in the heart of the city, where the local people go daily to select the best produce, meats, cheeses, olive oils, etc, etc. This incredibly colorful market is a delight for all your senses and a great photo opportunity! The class begins at the cooking school at 10 AM when you meet your chef who will lead you to Boqueria market, where he’ll regale you with personal stories and secrets of the market’s history and vendors as you pick out fresh ingredients for the day’s cooking class.

Then it is on to the kitchen, where you start with a glass of Rioja red or Albariño white wine to enjoy during your class. You will be immersed in the flavors, textures, and aromas of traditional Spanish cuisine, which you will be able to reproduce in your home.

The class will consist of four courses using the best and freshest local ingredients. (On Wednesdays, the four dishes you make and enjoy will all be tapas paired with 4 wines). Some of the dishes you may make are a cream of pumpkin, pear with cheese and caramelized hazelnuts, tortilla española, paella, and Catalan cream dessert. Afterwards you’ll feast on your fabulous creations for lunch!

  • Morning market class: 10AM to 2PM (approximately)

Please note: The Wednesday class focuses on tapas and wines.

The class was perfect! Javier took us first on a tour of Barcelona's amazing market, going from stall to stall explaining many of the Catalan foods that were presented, as well as cooking techniques for using them. This was a colorful and interesting start to a great day. We returned to the school with lunch purchases for a real hands on cooking adventure. Even with a class of 10 attendees, there was ample opportunity for everyone to participate. The lunch was plentiful and delicious. Javier's presentation was entertaining (many great stories) and yet very informative. We all (4 of us attended) enjoyed our day and would recommend this class highly. I loved the boqueria market visit and how our chef taught us so much about where the foods came from and how to buy them. I also really liked the class setup with each of us having a certain task to do but getting to dabble in many different things. Our chef was very patient with us and took the time to show us many techniques and tricks in the kitchen. He was also very humorous and engaging and made the class a great experience. The class was an amazing experience. We found the venue to be convenient, clean and well -appointed, and the chef was informative, helpful and a pleasure to learn from. We would highly recommend the Barcelona cooking class we took as a great way to get intimate with Catalan cuisine. The International Kitchen staff were pleasant to work with and very prompt in responding. Lynn and Cheryl E., and Ken S., Canada

We have taken many cooking classes on our travels over the years, but never used an internet site, always a travel agent. This class was excellent and we would highly recommend it to all our friends. We will definitely search your site for our next trip! Our instructor was exceptional, very knowledgeable and fun. I really loved the energy and charisma of our culinary instructor, Candido. He made the cultural part of the market tour come to life. I'd been through the Boqueria market a few times on my own but I learned so much having a guide. The cooking part was very enjoyable. I appreciated the attention to detail that he had when teaching us. In a gentle way, he helped us think like restaurant chefs. There was a lot of effort made to make the final product very beautiful while not wasting any food during the prep. It was a wonderful day and one of the highlights of my stay in Barcelona. [Regarding The International Kitchen staff:] The Chicago staff was helpful and easy to work with. I appreciated having a US contact to settle some of the registration details. Carolyn S., CA

The trip to the market in Barcelona was informative and fun. Much better than just walking through on our own. Loved the jamon samples. The shopping was great. The class was fun and the tapas were delicious. Our instructor was very helpful and fun to be with. We recommend The International Kitchens to all of our friends. [Regarding The International Kitchen staff:] We did not receive our Barcelona information and when I called the U.S. number they were able to resend our certificate and information. Very friendly and professional. John and Kari T., CA

The cooking class in Barcelona was terrific! I went with my daughter and her daughter, so 3 generations had a great experience. My granddaughter hasn't cooked much and learned a lot. I've been cooking forever, but I learned some new skills as well, and we all had fun. The trip through the Bouqueria was fascinating and instructive, and then cooking and eating the food bought there was a great idea. The group (about 12 of us) was a manageable number of congenial people, adults and children, which added to the fun.... Thanks for providing a wonderful experience--a highlight of our visit to Barcelona. Shelley
