Catalonian Tastes & Treasures: Costa Brava Food and Wine Tours

LLafranc village, visited during your culinary tour of SpainAs one of the most distinct and well-preserved regional cultures in Europe, Catalonia has much to offer its visitors: authentic local festivals and markets, age-old traditions of music, food, and crafts, and a wealth of historical and artistic sites, including the famed buildings of the early twentieth-century Modernisme architects. Whether you are strolling down Barcelona’s Ramblas boulevard, tasting delicious tapas at a local restaurant, exploring the many Gothic towns and local markets, or enjoying a glass of sparkling Cava wine, Catalonia will enchant and delight you, and draw you back again and again.

Your Catalonia cooking vacation will be based in the Empordá region, nestled along the coastline of the larger region of Catalonia in the northeastern part of the country and bordering France. It is a land of interesting contrasts. Here is where the surrealist art movement was born, but here is where fishermen have plied their trade (and still do) for centuries in the small fishing villages of the coast. There are prehistoric caves and megalithic structures, settlements by the ancient Greeks and ancient Iberians, Roman ruins, and more.

Girona river, visited during your culinary tour of SpainGirona is the main city of the region, a beautiful ancient town lying on a confluence of four rivers, and boasting a wonderfully preserved city center. It is so picturesque that it has been a frequent location for film production, including the Game of Thrones series. But the area is also known for its picturesque, quaint fishing villages, which you will explore on your Costa Brava culinary vacation.

Fishing equipment on shore in a Spanish fishing village. The Costa Brava’s miles of rugged coastline and beautiful beaches, coupled with the ideal climate, have made it a very popular tourist destination for Spaniards and other Europeans. This is the Mediterranean as you have always imagined it. Sunny, warm, gorgeous, and of course full of Mediterranean flavors and ingredients. Visit the region’s olive groves and wineries, see the catch brought in by the fisherman at the end of the day, and learn to prepare amazing Spanish dishes under the friendly eye of the local chefs.

Our family, two adults and two teens, had such a great experience. The itinerary and our guide were top notch! Both chefs were awesome. Our two children were able to participate and had a blast. They were trying out the recipes at home the day after we got back from our trip! Great variety of sites and activities. The van was very comfortable. Beautiful property, good location, great food! Our guide, Jordi, was terrific! He was very knowledgeable and accommodating. A great fit for our family.

Trip taken September 2007
We had a terrific time. We thoroughly enjoyed the classes. We learned quite a few new and interesting tricks to cooking. The days flew by. We loved visitng the bakery/chocolate store. The cheese maker was very good too. Some of the interesting sights in Besalu and the Market in Barcelona. We were incredibly full by the end of the week. The only complaint we had was the hotel we stayed at was a beautiful setting and the hosts couldn't have been more gracious, however the beds were antique not very easy to sleep in... Thank you for putting this wonderful trip together. (Note from TIK: These clients did an older version of the itinerary.)

The guides were terrific. They were considerate, accommodating, interesting and wonderful people. We became friends. The cooking classes and all the personnel involved were great -- we didn't expect to have so much fun. The sightseeing also was very, very good -- especially Barcelona, Girona, Besalu, Iberian ruins, chocolate visit. What would we change? Give us a break in the afternoon each day. We left hotel at 8:30 or 9 am, and didn't return until 11:30 or midnight. Consider adding another day to the itinerary. (Note from TIK: These clients did an older version of the itinerary.)

The guides did a fabulous job of planning the vacation and then making sure that every event was perfect. They were also so flexible. When they realized that we might like to go to see how cheese or candy was made rather than go to a ceramics factory, the plan was changed instantly (which I am sure was not an instantaneous change, but it did seem to be to us). What was special? Look at our itinerary, everything ties for first place. However, if I had to pick, it would be the cooking school. The Chef and his assistants were a delight and the meals fabulous. It was a wonderful way to share time with friends and very relaxing. (Note from TIK: These clients did an older version of the itinerary.)
