Don Alfonso

Your amazing Amalfi Coast culinary vacation will take place at the renowned restaurant and relais of Don Alfonso, located in the charming town of Sant Agata sui due Golfi, between the bay of Naples and the bay of Sorrento. This Relais and Chateaux property and Michelin honored “1890 Restaurant” are of the highest quality and known worldwide. Your home during your cooking holiday in Italy is a place of elegance and beauty nestled in the small, charming town, with just eight elegant and luxurious suites and junior suites, abundant gardens and flowers, situated around a lovely pool. And, imagine, there are 40 service people between the restaurant and relais to take care of your every need and desire during this deluxe cooking holiday.

This is a truly rarified experience with incredible top-level service. The wine cellar must be mentioned, as it is unique not only for its extensive collection of some of the greatest wines in the world, but also for the rooms that house them. The cellar descends vertically (and, yes, it is a challenging walk down and up!) from vaults that were built at the turn of the last century, with origins into the Roman era. The value and scope of the wines in the cellar is astonishing.

The cuisine of Don Alfonso is based on the principles of Mediterranean style, which you will explore during your hands-on cooking lessons. The origins of the cuisine are steeped in the traditions of the Campania region, combined with the creative interpretation of the Iaccarino family. They bring a contemporary ethos by using not only extra virgin olive oil, fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables, fresh fish or low fat meats, but also incorporating the most up-to-date cooking techniques. But the essential building blocks of the cuisines is the availability of the highest quality raw materials. They have dedicated themselves to producing their own fruits and vegetables, olive oil and lemon liqueur on their own farm near the restaurant.

From the minute we drove onto the property, we were greeted by our name and the entire staff was aware that we were there for the cooking program. Over the course of the days, we met every member of the Alfonso family. They came by every day and asked how we were doing and made us feel welcome. Cooking with the chef was great and we ate what we cooked every day with wine. We got a tour of their farm, which overlooks the Isle of Capri--so beautiful. We had 2 dinners there and had the tasting menus--one was just for the Campagna region, and the other was all of Italy, which they paired with wine. The dining room held 53 people and there were 21 chefs in the kitchen cooking the food--very impressive. The breakfast was amazing with fresh-made bakery items--and served elegantly. Really, this was an experience of a lifetime.

It was a great experience! The accommodation was great, very relaxing, amazing service. We were impressed with the attention to details throughout our staying. The food was very good, made with the best quality seasonal ingredients. We had Andrea as our chef for the school and he made it the classes fun. We focused on basic techniques and the results of our work did not let down. Don Alfonso and Livia, the owners, made us feel like home! I think we were looking for more reviews about the place, but were not able to find so we kind of took a chance. It did pay off!

Don Alfonso 1890. We were treated like royalty, and made to feel as part of the family. The cooking school is not for beginners. This is a 3 Star experience and Andrea, our instructor, taught us far more than just recipes and techniques. The food we prepared was the same as that served in the restaurant. Exquisite attention to detail. All of the staff at Don Alfonso 1890 functioned as one, anticipating every need. The two special dinners were more than wonderful. They were unforgettable. Our tours and tour guides were very informative and more than helpful. Fabrizio, our driver, went so far as to help us board the train and find our seats. Service beyond the extra mile.. I have only rave reviews for the entire experience. It should not be missed. You may certainly quote me in recommending this trip to future travelers. Don Alfonso 1890 was an experience of a lifetime...The people at Don Alfonso 1890 made you feel like part of their family. The young chef, Andrea, was fantastic. He was very knowledgeable and a terrific teacher. The food was unbelievable. Fabrizio, our driver, was wonderful. He even came onto the train and showed us to our seats when we left Naples. Talk about going the extra mile! There are too many things to list to be able to completely cover all that awed us. We did not want to leave. I have only rave reviews for the entire experience. This is a "cooking school" that should not be missed.
