Tuscany's Left Bank: Bolgheri and Supertuscan Wines

Tuscany is a land well known for its rolling hills and vineyards. The western part of the province may be lesser known, but it’s no less beautiful between its sprawling wine estates, hilltop towns, and miles of sandy coastline along the crystal-clear Tyrrhenian Sea. This land, known as the Etruscan Coast, is most famous for its Super Tuscan wines.

The wine production on the left bank of Tuscany began shortly after World War II when an Italian aristocrat decided to experiment with Bordeaux varieties and use French winemaking practices. With the land’s rich soil and the sunny maritime climate, the wines quickly took off, and by the 1970s they were renowned around the world and considered on par with – if not better than – French Bordeaux wines.

Nestled among these Bolgheri vineyards and near the Etruscan coast is the hamlet of Castagneto Carducci, just about 60 miles from Florence. Castagneto Carducci was named after the poet Giosue Carducci, and today the town continues to inspire artists and writers with the way the natural landscape seamlessly intertwines with the charming medieval town. In this stunning region, stay four nights in the lovely Villa Le Luci.

We were met at the Pisa airport by our host and driven to our B&B (his family's beautiful villa) in Castagneto Carducci a tiny town built on the side of a hill with magnificent views and sunsets. The next day we had a private tour of several wineries and Bolgheri (and a lunch of truffles and fresh pasta!). Day 3 and 4 we loved our private cooking class with Debrorah Corsi in the kitchen of La Perla del Mare on the beach in San Vincenzo. So much fun and informative with Cristina as our "interpreter" and partner in our cooking adventures. We did everything from removing ink sacks to puff pastry. A lovely tour of the beautiful Tenuta Argentiera winery and dinner "back home" in Castagneto Carducci. A great cooking and cultural experience with my daughter. We made new friends, cooked some delicious food and enjoyed Italian hospitality and wine. What more can you ask for? If you have a chance to take this trip, do it! [Regarding the cooking vacation packet:] Program packet was invaluable. [Regarding The International Kitchen staff] Answered every question we had.
