Best Culinary Tours of Sardinia Italy
Sardinia is one of Italy’s two major islands (the other being Sicily), with a land mass of over 9000 square miles. Its breathtaking terrain ranges begins with a rugged coastline including some of the world’s most pristine waters and beaches, and ends with a mountainous interior where ancient traditions and customs are still practiced.
Sardinia is as mysterious as its ancient stone houses, the conical, bronze-age Nuraghe that dot the landscape. It is a land of contrasts, home to “Giants’ Tombs,” pastoral traditions, chic sea-side resorts, and a unique language family so ancient and unchanged that it remains close to the Latin vernacular from which it derived.
The gastronomy of Sardinia is equally varied. The coastline is full of fantastic seafood dishes, including, of course, fresh fish and shellfish. however, you will also find bottarga, a cured fish-roe, and other more exotic fare. You will find street vendors in the winter and spring set up seaside and selling sea urchin and oysters. these are served ready to be enjoyed with a glass of Sardinian Vermentino, a crisp, citrusy white wine, along with a slice of bread. The interior, on the other hand, is full of freshly foraged mushrooms, amazing sheep’s milk cheese, ancient pasta traditions, and roast meats. Among the most known of Sardinian dishes is porceddu, or roast suckling pig, which is roasted over a spit for virtually every major holiday, often paired with roast lamb and roast goat. The cheeses range from the delightful fresh pecorino, a smooth, sweet cheese that can be used even in desserts, to the aged pecorino sardo, a bit similar to pecorino romano, but nuttier and less salty. Technically illegal but still consumed by the locals is cazu marzu, or ‘rotten cheese,’ a pecorino that has been deliberated infested by maggots to turn it into a pungent, creamy, and incredibly sharp cheese. Don’t worry, you don’t have to try it!
The pastas and breads of Sardinia are largely semolina based; the small “gnocchetti sardi” (malloreddus), perfect for holding delicious sauces, the plump culurngones filled with potato and mint (a delicious mashup of ravioli and pierogi), and the famed pane carasau, cracker-like bread so thin it is also called “music paper” (carta di musica).
Sardinian wines are just as fabulous to explore, including such varietals as the crisp Vermentino to the Vernaccia di Sardegna, which is nothing like a Tuscan Vernaccia, but rather a bold, almost sherry-like amber wine.
And don’t forget the prized reds, the full-bodied Canonau (Cannonau), or the after-dinner amaro, Mirto, a spirit made from the myrtle plant.
Although Sardinia, like so much of Italy, was conquered and ruled by various tribes and countries during its long history, its culture has remained largely distinct. This is perhaps because it is an island – and one that is not actually close to the mainland – or perhaps because its own ancient history and language are so utterly unique that it allowed the culture to maintain its distinctively Sardinian characteristics.
In fact, part of Sardinia is in one of the world’s Blue Zones, a small handful of places around the world where scientists have discovered the inhabitants live measurably longer lives. The secret to the inhabitants’ long lives is usually attributed to fresh, seasonal food, regular day-to-day exercise, and strong community support. If you meet a centenarian Sardinian shepherd who has spent his life roaming the steep mountain paths with his sheep, eating from the land, cared for by his family and friends, then you will understand the concept.
Your week in Sardegna will be based at a sprawling countryside hotel wonderfully situated near the central eastern coast. Within 30 minutes (or less) you can reach the beaches of Cala Gonone, the historical town of Nuoro, the archeological sites of Monte Tiscali and Serra Orios, as well as many vineyards, cheese producers, forested walks, and much, much more.
From this home base you will discover the beautiful landscape and incomparable flavors of Sardinia!
