For 15 years, Dorothy Tague has shared her knowledge of the world’s diverse cuisines with students at Chop, WOK & Talk, named Pittsburgh’s best cooking school in 2014. What began as a school focused on Southeast Asian cuisine has grown to encompass food from throughout the USA and around the world. Dorothy’s passion for regional and ethnic cuisine has taken her to New Orleans, San Antonio, NYC, Thailand, France, and Italy to study and teach. For her most recent adventure this September 2017, Dorothy led a group of students to Italy’s famous Amalfi Coast on The International Kitchen’s Mediterranean Cooking Experience. Together they spent a week learning the secrets of southern Italian and Mediterranean cuisine alongside young chefs Fabrizio and Giuseppe. As she described it, “An unforgettable experience with unforgettable people. The crew clicked immediately and all expressed our love for wine and food. Learning from a true Italian chef was incredible and helped us really understand what it takes to cook the simplest but most delicious foods.”


Now we are happy to announce our next collaboration, A Culinary Expedition in Portugal & Spain with Dorothy Tague, April 28 – May 6, 2018. This exclusive 8-night cooking tour is limited to 12 participants. Highlights include Lisbon and the Portuguese Riviera, Porto and the vineyards of the Duoro Valley, and Madrid with its cosmopolitan charms, gourmet shops, and famous restaurants. Join Dorothy and The International Kitchen on this one-time only adventure through two of Europe’s foodiest destinations!

A Culinary Expedition in Portugal & Spain with Dorothy Tague Itinerary

Day 1 – Saturday, April 28

  • Arrive Lisbon and group transfer to our centrally located 4-star hotel.
  • Lunch on your own and time at leisure until our 2-hour sunset boat cruise.
  • After the sunset cruise, group dinner in an authentic Lisbon restaurant, including local wine (1/2 bottle per person).
  • Return to hotel and overnight.

Day 2 – Sunday, April 29

  • Breakfast.
  • After breakfast, begin our first hands-on cooking class focused on Portuguese cuisine followed by lunch with wine.
  • Afternoon at leisure, or choose an optional guided historical walking tour of old Lisbon for an extra $40 per person.
  • Dinner tonight in another authentic Lisbon restaurant, including local wine (1/2 bottle per person).
  • Return to hotel and overnight.

Day 3 – Monday, April 30

  • Breakfast.
  • After breakfast we depart for a full day excursion to the “Portuguese Riviera” towns of Sintra, Cascais, and Estoril including round trip transportation and lunch in a local restaurant (1/2 bottle of wine per person).
  • Return to Lisbon in the late afternoon for leisure time until dinner.
  • Dinner tonight in another authentic Lisbon restaurant, including local wine (1/2 bottle per person).
  • Overnight

Day 4 – Tuesday, May 01

  • Breakfast and check out.
  • Group transfer by bus to Porto, approximately 3 hours driving.
  • Arrive Porto and check in to our centrally located 4-star hotel.
  • Lunch on your own and leisure time until dinner.
  • At 2:00pm for those interested an optional historic walking tour of old Porto at no extra cost. The tour visits the city’s historical centre of world heritage and monuments of Porto. Itinerary: Torre dos Clérigos, Livraria Lello e Irmão, Avenida dos Aliados, Estação de S. Bento, Ponte Luís I, Sé Catedral, Bairro da Sé and Ribeira.
  • Dinner tonight in authentic Porto restaurant including wine (1/2 bottle per person).
  • Return to hotel and overnight.

Day 5 – Wednesday, May 02

  • Breakfast.
  • At 9:00am venture out of the city to discover some of the most beautiful treasures the Douro River Valley has to offer. After a journey of about one and a half hour the day starts at Quinta do Seixo – an amazing wine farm. This is an unforgettable journey through the beautiful landscapes of scenic mountains and wonderful views. Lunch is included (1/2 bottle of wine per person).
  • Transfer back to Porto hotel followed by 2-3 hours leisure time.
  • At 4:30pm, visit to a port wine aging cellar in Porto, where port wine has historically been aged, including wine tasting. While the grapes are grown in the vineyards of the Duoro valley, Port wine does not become real Port until after the ageing process which is done in cellars within the city.
  • At 6:30pm begin our second hands on cooking class focused on class Portuguese dishes followed by dinner with wine.
  • Return to hotel and overnight.

Day 6 – Thursday, May 03

  • Breakfast and check out.
  • Group transfer to Porto airport for flight to Madrid.
  • Arrive Madrid and check in to our centrally located 4-star hotel.
  • Leisure time to explore Madrid on your own, or take an optional guided walking culture and tapas tour of Madrid’s famous Bourbon district (3 hours) including a tapas dinner and sightseeing tour by bus (1 hour). The tour lasts a total of 4 hours and costs an extra $100 per person.
  • If not participating in the tour, leisure time, dinner on your own.
  • Overnight.

Day 7 – Friday, May 04

  • Breakfast.
  • From 10:00am – 12:45pm we will enjoy a short tapas class including lunch with wine.
  • At 1:00pm, we will leave Madrid to learn about ecologic olive oil production at an olive farm approximately one and a half hour’s drive away. The farms owner, Marta, will take us to visit the centennial olive grove, cradle of ecological “cornicabra” olives. We will have a fantastic tasting, right in the groves, of 3 virgin olive oils.
  • Approximately 4:00pm, return to Madrid, arriving about 5:30pm to enjoy leisure time until dinner.
  • At 8:30pm in the evening dinner at the famous Botin restaurant. It is the oldest restaurant in the world by Guiness. Try its specialties in a fixed menu, roasted lamb or suckling pig including wine (1/2 bottle per person).
  • After dinner at 10:30pm we will then enjoy a Flamenco show, next to the restaurant (drinks not included).
  • Return to the hotel and overnight.

Day 8 – Saturday, May 05

  • Breakfast and morning at leisure.
  • From 12:00pm-4:00pm we will enjoy our fourth hands-on cooking class. Drinks will be served from the beginning to the end. We will participate in the elaboration of the full menu and in the culminating stage, participants will set the table and sit down all together and enjoy the fruits of our efforts, accompanied by the delicious typical Spanish drink, sangria or top Spanish wines.
  • Later this afternoon our guide will meet us in the hotel lobby to guide for the Ultimate Gourmet tour in Madrid. Discover one of the finest and most luxurious neighbourhoods of “Salamanca,” not only to admire the beautiful facades of the buildings or the wonderful shop windows, but also to discover some of its Gourmet stores with delicatessen products, its fabulous local market and some “innovative” Gourmet markets that combine stores, restaurants, and leisure.
  • Our first stop and visit will be one of the most successful gourmet shops in Madrid and where we can find the most diverse products. Here we will taste seasonal products.
  • Next we will visit the neighbourhood market where residents and pedestrians stroll and browse to buy. Since 1882 with his impeccable stalls and friendly atmosphere, it offers a wide range of selected products of the highest quality.
  • Just a 5 minute walk away we next find the best of Galicia: gourmet canned seafood, a selection of products that have made the Galician coast a gastronomic reference worldwide. We will taste some paired with a superb wine.
  • Next stop is the sixth floor of a large shopping center, aimed at a new Gourmet Club with a large dining tent and bar, which is accessed by a glass elevator. With a menu structured in different temperatures, from a section ‘above zero’ with seafood and pickles; one at 20 degrees and the other at 60 degrees. Here we will enjoy a good and innovative tapa.
  • The next stop will be a unique gastronomic leisure space. A magical place where something is always happening. A haven to relax and enjoy, a meeting point where every detail makes sense. We will taste great Spanish tapas, from Iberian ham or Spanish cheeses, to croquettes, Salmorejo (thick gazpacho) etc.
  • A final 10-minute walk will be worth as it is in front of the Retiro Park: it hides a tiny shop, which makes a priceless treasure: the best chocolate cake in the world. Lets taste it with a coffee or tea to end this memorable Delicatessen tour.
  • Return to the hotel and overnight.

Day 9 – Sunday, May 06

  • Breakfast and check out.
  • Group transfer to Madrid airport.
