A Foodie Adventure on São Miguel, Azores
The Azores are an archipelago of nine volcanic islands which comprise one of two autonomous regions in Portugal, together with Madeira to the South. Located just under 900 miles west of mainland Portugal, the region is known for its mild climate, agriculture, and hot springs.
The largest island of the Azores, São Miguel, will be your home base for this magical culinary exploration of one of Portugal’s most beautiful locales.
There is evidence that the Azores have been inhabited on and off since ancient times, hundreds of years prior to the Portugeuse communities that would settle the area in the 15th century. There are hypogea, which are structures carved underground to form man-made caves that were likely used to store grain, as well as evidence of land clearing for agricultural use that dates back to 700-800 AD. These settlements likely belonged to the sea-faring vikings, who would have been drawn to the region for the same reasons as the Portugeuse: arid climate, verdant land, and natural beauty.
The Azores are famous for seafood, and octopus or fish stews are often the star of the meal. Other delicious fish dishes include Chicharros fritos, or fried mackerel, and the local favorite of Lapas grelhadas, which are fried limpets. Pimenta salgada are a red pepper grown on the island that are sliced up and added to various sandwiches and other dishes, adding a typical Portuguese flavor.
The Azores are also home to their own wine-producing regions, as the volcanic terrain of the islands is perfect for grape cultivation. Rinto dos Açores, Verdelho, and Terrantez do Pico are the three most traditional grape varieties in the region, and the vineyards are characterized by their geometric network of dry stone walls, meant to protect the vines from wind and salt spray.
