Insider's Culinary Vacation in Athens

Toasting on a beautiful day in Greece.

Experience Athens like an insider on this authentic culinary vacation in Greece. The capital is one of the world’s oldest and most influential cities — the cradle of Western civilization, the birthplace of democracy, and a place where the legacy of ancient Greece still shapes everyday life. Its archaeological sites are unmatched: the Acropolis and its Parthenon temple, built in the 5th century BC, remain among the most recognizable monuments in the world.

But Athens today is also a vibrant modern city full of neighborhoods perfect for exploring on a Greek food tour. From the elegant streets around Syntagma to lively districts filled with cafés, bakeries, and taverns, the city offers countless ways to experience authentic Greek food. Visits to the central market, neighborhood bakeries, and traditional restaurants reveal the daily rhythms of Athens cuisine and introduce you to delicious olives, cheeses, seafood, and other unique local treats.

Athens as visited on a culinary tour of Greece.

During this Greek culinary vacation, you will stay in a small private villa in the northern part of Athens. Your host, a native who knows the city intimately, will guide you through the culinary backstreets of the city, sharing local insights and favorite spots that many tourists never discover.

Greek cuisine is the essence of Mediterranean cooking, built around extra virgin olive oil, fresh herbs, seasonal vegetables, seafood, nuts, fruits, and local produce. Through hands-on cooking classes, food tastings, and market visits, you will explore classic dishes such as spanakopita, dolmadas, moussaka, and baklava while gaining insight into Greece’s rich culinary tradition.

Rather than a quick visit to famous landmarks followed by tourist restaurants, this small-group Athens food tour offers a deeper way to explore the city — through its food, culture, and everyday life.

So what are you waiting for?

    Day Two

    Cooking class in Greece.

    • Breakfast at the villa.
    • Set off on a culinary adventure with your hosts during an immersive Greek cooking class in which you will learn to prepare two staples of Greek cuisine: moussaka and baklava. This introduction to Greek cooking will acquaint you with the bold flavors, herbs, and spices that define Athens cuisine and the broader Mediterranean culinary tradition.
    • For lunch, you will enjoy the results of your cooking class.
    • After lunch, take a short rest before heading out for a walk to the historic grounds of the Royal Tatoi estate. Although the estate is currently undergoing renovations, it still retains its regal charm and offers an interesting glimpse into Greece’s royal history.
    • Return to the villa for leisure time.
    • This evening you will focus on mastering the art of making the perfect Spanikopita, crafting the delicate phyllo dough from scratch.
    • This warm and flaky pie is the perfect evening meal after a long day.
    • Overnight.

    Day Three

    Fish at the Athens Market.

    • Breakfast followed by leisure time.
    • Later you will depart for an excursion to the Monastiraki area, known for its lively flea market and fascinating mix of stalls, shops, and cafés. While here you will have time to explore the market and make your own discoveries in one of downtown Athens’ most vibrant districts.
    • Next, you will travel to Athens’ legendary central food market, Varvakeios. Here you will be immersed in the colors, aromas, and energy of the market as you browse stalls filled with fresh vegetables, fish, meats, herbs, and spices. Along the way you will have the opportunity to taste traditional Greek delicacies such as loukoumi (Turkish delight), halva, olives, and nuts. Other authentic specialties such as honey, extra virgin olive oil, spices, and Greek coffee are also available and make wonderful souvenirs.
    • Lunch will be enjoyed at the market, where you can try meat soups and authentic Greek meze dishes, complemented by the classic Greek drink ouzo.
    • After lunch, you will select ingredients from the market for that evening’s cooking class.
    • During your next cooking class, you will learn the traditional “giahni” technique while preparing cauliflower cooked in tomato sauce. Sourdough bread and feta cheese complete the meal, creating a simple but delicious combination of rustic Greek flavors.
    • Overnight.

    Day Four

    Changing of the guard.

    • Breakfast at the villa.
    • Depart early to avoid the crowds as you immerse yourself in the historic heart of Athens. Your exploration begins at the Ancient Agora, once the center of public life in ancient Greece. Here you will visit the Temple of Hephaestus, one of the best-preserved temples of antiquity, as well as the Stoa of Attalos and its museum, which displays artifacts spanning the archaic through neoclassical periods. Continuing on to the Roman Agora, you will observe the ruins of Hadrian’s Library, the Tower of the Winds, and the impressive Gate of Athena Archegetis.
    • Lunch will take place at a local restaurant famous for its flavorful kebabs and gyros, offering another opportunity to enjoy authentic Greek food. Afterward, stop for a coffee break at a traditional café where you will savor Greek coffee brewed in hot sand, accompanied by loukoumi and a small glass of rose liqueur.
    • You will then continue your exploration of Athens with a stop at the Greek Parliament to watch the changing of the guards, known as the “Tsoliades,” dressed in their traditional ceremonial attire. Afterward, drive to the Panathenaic Stadium (Kalimarmaro), the historic site of the first modern Olympic Games.
    • This evening, dinner will be at one of Athens’ finest restaurants on Lycabettus Hill, where the stunning panoramic views of the city complement the refined Greek cuisine.
    • Overnight.

    Day Five

    A delicious lunch in Greece.

    • Following breakfast, you may choose between two different excursions.
    • One option is to explore the charming suburb of Kifisia, known for its elegant mix of neoclassical and modern architecture. Here you can stroll through the town center, browse local shops, or book a spa treatment or yoga class. You may also wish to visit an art gallery or the natural history museum before enjoying brunch at one of the graceful neoclassical cafés. On your way back, you will stop at a local bakery to pick up fresh bread to accompany that evening’s dinner.
    • Alternatively, you may visit the European Museum of Decorative Bread in the village of Varnavas. The museum houses more than 3,000 examples of embroidered breads from Greece and over 50 other countries and is the largest collection of decorative and religious bread in Europe. The exhibits highlight the many bread embroidery traditions passed down through generations and illustrate the “circle of bread,” from sowing and kneading to its place at the table. You will enjoy lunch at the museum café before stopping at a winery on your return to the villa to select a wine to complement your evening meal.
    • After returning to the villa, you will have time to rest and enjoy some leisure time before your next cooking class.
    • During your evening cooking class, you will prepare three traditional Greek dishes, including a seasonal Greek salad. The meal begins with a lamb shank slowly roasted in the oven with orzo pasta. You will also prepare tzatziki and feta saganaki wrapped in phyllo and drizzled with honey. Dinner will follow, allowing you to enjoy the dishes you have prepared.
