Authentic Southern Italy Cooking Vacations in Abruzzo and Puglia

Exploring the streets of an Abruzzese town. We’ve paired with one of our favorite local partners to offer a comprehensive culinary tour of two of southern Italy’s most enchanting regions. Abruzzo and Puglia are both beautiful and authentic, full of charming towns, gorgeous seaside, stunning mountain scapes, and centuries-old food traditions.

Abruzzo, to the north of Puglia, runs from the mountains down to the Adriatic sea, while Puglia – the “heel” of Italy’s boot – runs down the Salentine peninsula. Visit both, as well as the ancient city of Matera, during this unique 11-night journey.

You authentic Italy cooking vacation in Abruzzo and Puglia will lead you first to Sulmona,  deep in the mountains of Abruzzo. Lying in the Peligna Valley, this picturesque town is surrounded by mountain views. It is famed as the birthplace of Ovid, as well as “confetti,” the colorful sugar-covered almonds that are a staple at Italian weddings.

Typical buildings in the southern Italian region of PugliaYou next head to Vasto, perched over the Adriatic Sea. Its beautiful promenade looks out toward over the coast, where local fishermen have been harvesting from their wooden “trabocchi” structures for centuries. It is a town known for its pristine beaches, its centuries of history, and its charming historical center.

You next head to Puglia, and the authentic Italian town of Conversano, a town that is quintessential of the area, with its sunny streets, white-washed buildings, and surrounding orchards. Although Puglia is most famous for its incredible number of olive groves – some dating back over a thousand years – Conversano is also surrounded by cherry trees. Its most iconic structure is undoubtedly the Castle of Conversano – a large, ancient Norman castle on the top of the hill.

Burrata on a culinary vacation in Puglia, ItalyAbruzzo and Puglia are similar in terms of gastronomy, and yet each cherishes also their own regional differences. Abruzzo is where the seaside meets the mountains, while Puglia’s agricultural production (not only olive oil but many of Italy’s grain and grape production) make its local products second to none. Local regional specialties for both range from wonderful pastas to meats and cheeses, and the fresh seafood fished from the Adriatic. You will have the chance to enjoy all of these and more during your hands-on cooking classes., which will be with different chefs and will feature local recipes from both regions.

In addition to the weeks taking place in Abruzzo and Puglia, you can also choose the classic 6-night itinerary in Vasto, a special 6-night itinerary in nearby Le Marche, or even a 7-night tour of Sicily.
