Antinori's Noble Tuscany

About the Tuscany cooking vacation location: The Antinori family is one of Italy’s most famous wine-making families, and they will welcome you on one of our best Tuscany wine tours. They have been making wines in the Chianti region of Tuscany for over seven hundred years, and the Marchese Piero Antinori shook up the entire Italian wine world with “Tignanello” known today as one of the first Super Tuscans, which have for the decades since been regarded as some of the best wines in the world.

But wine is only a part of the amazing Antinori presence in Tuscany that you will experience on our Tuscany wine tours, as they are deeply committed to the land, the food, and the people. A small “borgo” owned by the Antiniori family, is the primary location for this International Kitchen Tuscany cooking school vacation and wine tasting tour, and your instructor will be the famed Michelin-star chef Matia Barciulli or one of his chefs. Spend a week savoring the food and wines of Tuscany while enjoying the gorgeous views over the Antinori vineyards on one of our favorite Tuscany wine tours and foodie trips.

Itinerary

Day One

  • Group transfer from Florence airport or train station to Fonte de’ Medici, home for our Tuscany wine tours with the Antinori family. This beautiful wine resort, owned by the famed wine-making family, is perfectly nestled in between the Chianti vineyards. The village, six hundred years old, takes its name from a fresh water spring that served as a resting place for pilgrims on their way from Florence to Rome.
  • Check in to your room (each room is named after a different grape), and enjoy a late afternoon at leisure to relax by the pool.
  • Welcome dinner at “Trattoria della Fonte,” the resort restaurant.
  • Overnight.

Antinori estate in Tuscany

Day Two

  • Breakfast, followed by the morning at your disposal to enjoy the hotel facilities.
  • Lunch on your own.
  • Around 3:30 pm, meet the Chef at the Fonte de’ Medici Cooking School, where you will learn the two basic tenets of Tuscan cuisine : selection of fresh ingredients and olive oil!
  • After class, transfer and visit the historical Antinori wine cellars in Badia a Passignano (The Abbey of Passignano), located in the Chianti Classico region. The abbey is an ancient monastery dating back to 395 AD, when it was established by the archbishop of Florence. Today it is still inhabited by monks of the Vallombrosian Order, who remain the guardians of their cultural and historical treasures. It is one of the most famous cellars in Italy, and a must-see on our Tuscany wine tours in the Chianti.
  • Dinner will follow at the Michelin-starred restaurant Osteria di Passignano, along with some prestigious Antinori wines.
  • Overnight.

Cooking class in Tuscany

Day Three

  • Breakfast.
  • At 9:30 am, meet your English-speaking driving guide for a full-day excursion to Siena and San Gimignano. In Siena you will have time at your disposal to discover on your own the city that was Florence’s sworn enemy for centuries, and that today is famous throughout world for hosting the Palio horse race in early July and mid August in Piazza del Campo, the town’s main square.
  • Lunch on your own in Siena. (Your driving guide will provide background on Siena with suggestions of things to see and places to eat, but if you prefer a 2-hour guided walking tour of the city, that can be arranged at an additional cost, to be paid locally.)
  • After lunch, depart for San Gimignano, known as the “Manhattan” of Tuscany for its stunning skyline of rare medieval tower-houses. The village is a UNESCO heritage site, and its main church, the Duomo, contains magnificent frescos of great Tuscan Renaissance artists like Benozzo Gozzoli and Domenico Ghirlandaio. Time at your disposal to walk around and shop on your own.
  • Early in the afternoon, transfer back to Fonte de’ Medici.
  • Dinner at “Trattoria della Fonte” and overnight.

Chef Matia and Peg

Day Four

  • Breakfast and early morning at your disposal for individual explorations of the area, or for use of the hotel facilities.
  • At 11:45 a.m., transfer to the new headquarters of the prestigious Antinori family, certainly the biggest name in the world of Tuscan Wines, to continue your wine tasting tours in Tuscany. The Antinoris waited seven years to complete their breathtaking new cellar. From the very beginning, the fundamental concept was that of “invisibility.” The cellars were to be constructed in total harmony with the landscape and, for this reason, it was decided to plant a vineyard to cover the entire edifice. Enjoy a guided visit of the cellar followed by lunch at Ristorante Rinuccio 1180 inside the cellars. This is one of our favorite experiences during our Tuscany wine tours.
  • Return to Fonte de’ Medici after lunch and enjoy your next cooking class and dinner at “Trattoria della Fonte.”
  • Overnight at Fonte de’ Medici.

Pizza class in Italy

Day Five

  • Breakfast at the estate.
  • Around 9:30 am, meet your English-speaking driving guide for a full day excursion. You will first discover Greve and its quaint Piazza, where you make sure to stop at Falorni’s Butcher Shop. Walk up to Montefioralle to discover the Medieval village where Amerigo Vespucci was born.
  • Later, proceed to Castellina in Chianti and stop at Querceto di Castellina Wine Estate, a family-run winery, for a different sort of Tuscany wine tour and tasting. Enjoy a guided wine tasting together with a light lunch to follow.
  • Around 4:30 pm, arrive at Badia a Passignano, where you will head to the Pizzeria “Le Scuderie” to learn how to make a real Italian pizza in a wood-burning pizza oven. After the class you will be able to eat your own “personal” pizza.
  • Transfer back to Fonte de’ Medici.
  • Overnight.

Hotel swimming pool

Day Six

  • Breakfast, followed by free time to enjoy the pool or for a nice walk in the hills, woods, and vineyards surrounding Fonte de’ Medici. Or, enjoy a bike ride (bikes are provided by the property free of charge).
  • Lunch on your own.
  • Around 3:30 pm, meet Chef Matia for your last hands-on cooking lesson focusing on fresh pasta and bread, with a tasting of your dishes during the class.
  • Barbecue dinner to follow the cooking class.
  • Overnight.

Hotel bedroom

Day Seven

  • Breakfast and check out. Group transfer around 10:00 am to Florence railway station or Florence airport.

The trip was very well organized, and all aspects of the itinerary fell into place as scheduled. The drivers who looked after getting us around were very friendly and knowledgeable about the region, and their English was very good. Our accommodations on the Antinori property were very nice, quiet and clean. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The only glitch we had was on the first night we arrived, we were told we would have dinner in the restaurant on the property, but the restaurant staff seemed unaware that we were there as part of the cooking tour, and we were presented with a bill at the end of the meal. The hotel desk staff eventually refunded the value later in the week, but I would suggest that there be a little clearer communication that the meal was included in the tour, and that the guests be made clear that dinner will be looked after, or it be communicated to the restaurant staff that dinner was part of the tour. With all of the other meals we ate in restaurants, it seemed to be very clear to the restaurant that we were with a tour, and they knew what was planned as far as menu items or choices. The chefs conducting the actual cooking classes were superb. They did not take themselves too seriously, were more than willing to joke around, and had great patience with those of us who were not particularly culinarily gifted. [Regarding the cooking vacation packet:] In general very thorough. The content for the day four cooking class wasn't specified ahead of time - was preparing meat dishes - but knowing ahead wouldn't have changed anything. Everything else seemed to happen as advertised. [Regarding The International Kitchen staff:] We didn't have direct contact with the Chicago staff, but Adelle at TravelMasters in Saskatoon did an excellent job of matching us with this tour and putting everything in place. One thought...as this was our first trip to Europe, we were unsure of the local expectations regarding gratuities. Some guidance from those with previous experience may have been helpful. Beverly & Michael R., Canada

_Response from The International Kitchen:_ Thank you for your feedback! We appreciate it, and we apologize for the initial confusion regarding your welcome dinner. Regarding gratuities, we include our recommendations in our welcome letter, which was included in your cooking vacation packet!

It was very hands on. The chef's made sure we did everything. The Fonte de' Medici resort was wonderful. The restaurant on the property had wonderful food. We had a lovely room. It was a great experience that we will remember forever. It was very relaxing while on the resort. I could move there! The guides, and transportation for our sightseeing were on time and very knowledgeable. We highly recommend this resort. [Regarding the cooking vacation packet:] Yes, there was enough information and very much appreciated. [Regarding The International Kitchen staff:] I'm not sure who answered my email request about self service laundry, but they do have self service laundry at the resort. I was told that they did not and I was told to ask my tour operator these questions. Josephine H.

We had a phenomenal time!! Everything went perfectly from pick up to delivery. We adored our chef, Niarcho and the wonderful special restaurant. Two suggestions- our driver's English wasn't great- would help if it was better, also we actually hired him to drive us to some of the surrounding towns. We think you should build that in. Thanks for everything!

Loved the location, the chef was wonderful. The dinner at Osteria di Passignano Was spectacular. One of our drivers was good, the other did not know enough English to help us. Suggestions: offer a second day of sightseeing (we arranged it ourselves). Also give option of another restaurant. Jill
