Greek Cooking Odyssey with Dorothy Tague - October 8-15, 2022

Spend a week on the island of Poros with cooking instructor Dorothy Tague during our best-selling culinary tour in Greece! Learn to make authentic Greek cuisine with a professional chef and experience Greek Island life.

The ancient Greeks believed in the benefits of adding fresh herbs and spices to their food to improve the taste and to provide medicinal benefits. Greek food remains to this day a mix of fresh, seasonal ingredients, a generous helping of herbs such as thyme, rosemary and oregano (which grow all over Greece), and plenty of olive oil. Greece is surrounded by the Sea as fish is an integral part of Greek regional cuisine. Fresh vegetables also play a significant role in Greek cooking, which you will discover during our cooking vacations.

Your culinary vacation in Greece will be very fun and instructive. Participants will explore real Greek culture, cook delicious food, have free time for swimming or other optional activities on this beautiful, unspoiled Greek Island!

Trip Details

Your 5 cooking classes will help you discover the wonderful flavors of Greek cuisine. Katerina is a professional chef and owner of the Odyssey Centre. A Poros native, she is passionate about both traditional and modern Greek cooking. You lessons will include meats, seafood, plenty of fresh vegetables, and traditional Greek desserts.


Day OneGreek artichokes

  • Group transfer from Athens airport to your accommodations. (If you cannot make the group transfer, an additional transfer can be arrange for an additional cost.)
  • Your chef and hostess Katerina will welcome you, then you have the afternoon free to explore Askeli, to enjoy the pool, or to take swim in the blue sea.
  • This evening enjoy your welcome dinner at Odyssey center; you will be introduced to some of the Greek dishes that you will learn to cook during your stay.
  • Overnight.

Day Two

  • After breakfast you explore the menus and recipes you will learn during your cooking lessons.
  • Lunch will be served around 12:30 PM.
  • Time at leisure to take a stroll into Poros, enjoy a local walk followed by a swim at Love Bay, or organize one of the optional activities.
  • Around 2:30 PM begin your first cooking lesson, followed by a late afternoon drink or a small siesta.
  • Return around 5:00 PM to finish preparing the dinner, which will be served in the relaxed atmosphere of the Odyssey Center.
  • Overnight.

Cooking classes in Greece

Day Three

  • Early breakfast.
  • Walk to Poros Harbor to visit the fish market and pick out a range of ingredients for today’s lesson.
  • This will be followed by a stop at a local cafe for coffee and Greek pastries.
  • After lunch at the Odyssey, the early part of the afternoon is free for individual activities or optional excursions.
  • Mid-afternoon, begin preparing the evening meal from the fish chosen at the market along with freshly prepared Greek salads, sauces, vegetables, and herb dressings.
  • Dinner to follow.
  • Overnight.

Cooking vacations in Greece

Day Four

  • Breakfast.
  • Today will include an excursion to the island of Hydra, with lunch provided.
  • Return to Poros, where you will have a choice of dining at the Odyssey center or at a local tavern.
  • Overnight.

Toasting after a Greek cooking class

Day Five

  • Breakfast followed by a free day to explore Poros Island, to relax on the beach, or to organize additional excursions and activities.
  • Lunch will be served at Odyssey around 1:00 PM.
  • This evening meet for another cooking class to prepare a full Greek meal, including dessert.
  • Overnight.

Swimming on a Greek cooking holiday

Day Six

  • After breakfast, enjoy a visit either to your hosts’ lemon or olive groves to learn about the use of both ingredients in Greek cuisine; a picnic lunch will be provided today.
  • On returning to the Odyssey Center in the mid-afternoon, begin your next cooking class, a Greek classic meal that could feature such items as Mousakka, Pistachio or Souvlaki.
  • Dinner to follow.
  • Overnight.

Greek spanakopita

Day Seven

  • Today you will enjoy a local excursion to learn about the important seasonal nature of ingredients in Greek cuisine. Your morning may include collecting local herbs and flowers or visiting local farms.
  • Lunch will be provided either at Odyssey Center or as a picnic.
  • Tonight your final cooking lesson followed by a wonderful farewell dinner — a true Greek experience!
  • Overnight.

Greek dessert

Day Eight

  • Breakfast followed by transfer to Piraeus Port and then a private taxi to airport or hotel. (To arrive at the airport by 10 a.m., depart from the island at 6:30 a.m.)

Classes & Instructors

3 seasonally based guided visits such as:

  • Visit to the local fish market
  • Visit to your hosts’ lemon or olive grove
  • Herb foraging or farm visit
  • Guided island trip to Hydra

Additional excursions can be booked locally, including:

  • Wine tour to Nimea/Skouras vineyard (minimum of 4 people): 60 Euros per person
  • Five-hour fishing trip by boat including equipment and lunch (minimum 4 people): 60 Euros per person
  • 4-wheeler rental per day: 40 Euros (International Drivers’ License required)
  • Moped rental per day: 20 euros (International Drivers’ License required)
  • Electric cycle rental: 15 Euros per day
  • Bicycle rental: 6 Euros per day
  • There is a water sports center at a nearby beach that offers water ski, paragliding, wake boarding, and jet ski: prices range from 25 to 80 Euros for these sessions.

Please note that availability and prices for these optional excursions are subject to change.

Transfer Details

  • There will be one group arrival transfer by private taxi – you are met at the Athens airport or Athens hotel and brought to Galatas for the short ferry ride to Poros, then to the hotel. (If you cannot make the grouptransfer, we can schedule a private transfer for an additional fee.)
  • The group return transfer is the reverse of the arrival transfer.

Note that because Poros is an island, transfer times are dictated by the ferry schedule. Please do not schedule arrival flights after 8:00 pm. Regarding departure, guests are not able to arrive at the airport any earlier than 10:00 a.m. (so please check your flight check-in times to see if this is feasible). If you cannot keep flight times within these parameters, plan to spend extra time in Athens before and/or after your cooking vacation.

Accommodation Information

Your accommodations will be at the Odyssey Center in one of the 11 rooms and apartments. Each is bright and comfortable, with ensuite bathrooms. They are equipped with air-conditioning, safe, TV, and are located just steps from where your cooking classes will happen.
