We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and cooking classes at the Chateau De Berne. The accommodations were just fantastic. The place is totally remodeled and it was just outstanding.  All of the employees there really take their job seriously and catered to our every whim.  I would whole heartedly recommend it to any of my friends.  We rented the car in Avignon after our train ride from Paris and then turned it in at the Nice Airport.  All went smooth.  Thanks again for all you did for us to make this trip special. We have now returned home from our Culinary visit to Chateau de Berne. This was my first experience of attending a french Cooking School and so I tried to prepare myself by doing some research on the Chateau etc. However, despite my efforts I could not have expected anywhere near what I experienced. The Chateau itself is breathtakingly beautiful, surrounded by the vinyards and olive trees, it was elegant yet charming. The entire experience was no less than perfect. The staff and service at the chateau were outstanding. Our Chef Sebastien, his assistant Martine, the maitre de Frederic, the driver and tour guide Allain and the many others who assisted made our visit comfortable, enjoyable and memorable. This vacation was supposed to be for me "a once in a lifetime" experience but after spending one of the finest weeks I could ever imagine I would like to do this trip again sometime. I would also like to thank and congratulate you and your efficient staff for organizing and arranging everything that was necessary for the trip. This has truly been an exceptional vacation. Thank you, Joanne

Just wanted to let you know that the trip was an experience of a lifetime. The travel went very smoothly, the weather was great, the food fantastic, the accommodations luxurious and the staff very friendly and helpful. The cooking classes were wonderful-informative and fun. We enjoyed the extra activities as well. The setting is so peaceful; we took many long walks. We will recommend Chateau de Berne to our friends. Thanks again to you and the rest of the staff for putting together such a memorable trip. Roxanne C., CA

The cooking classes at Chateau De Berne was wonderful. We loved the Chef and the menus he prepared were amazing. We have since featured several of the dishes at dinner parties to rave reviews. The second day of classes was a little crowded but the Chef and his assistant accommodated everyone. The one item on the itinerary that was a little disappointing was the trip to the market. We were under the impression that the Chef was going to accompany us. It ended up just being time to browse the markets with lunch provided at a local restaurant. ... The accommodations and Chateau de Berne were just wonderful. We were so pampered - it really was a terrific honeymoon retreat. Kristen B., LA

This experience was one of the most fun ones I have had... All the staff at the Chateau were wonderful and bent over backwards to make our stay special. The room we had was large, well decorated and very comfortable and the food in the restaurants was excellent. Chef Philippe Migot was absolutely fabulous! He is a wonderful chef and has a personality very well suited to teaching. The number of students varied each day from 6 to 10, which was a great size of class. Everyone got along extremely well (we had so much fun every day) and often in our free time chose to spend it with other people from the class. At the end of the week we hated to say goodbye to our new friends! To say what I liked most about the trip is difficult, but I think I would have to say the chef, and the choice of things he taught us to make. Everything was professionally done and the cooking facilities more exceptional. The only "slightly" negative comment I have is that the printed recipes we were given were sometimes a little hazy, but this was probably due to the translation. We were all able to take additional notes and are sharing them with others in the class, so that we can duplicate them at home. This was not a big problem and is hardly worth mentioning. All in all, I have highly recommended the Chateau de Berne to anyone who asks about my trip and would love to go again. I would like to go to another school but am afraid that I might be disappointed as I don't think anywhere else could live up to my experience in Lourges. Morag S., VA

We were met by a charming driver, the transportation was new and clean, the grounds of the chateau were spectacular and clean. Our suite offered everything we requested, including the view of the vinyard! The cooking school was a blast! Phillip our teaching chef and Annie, his translator were adorable and very talented. We learned many new techniques about Provencial cooking...and wine appreciation. Bill, the owner of the chateau was "on property" and available to handle anything that his capable staff could not... The others in our cooking class were so much fun....I would HIGHTLY RECCOMMEND cheateau de Berne for a cooking adventure and I plan to return. All of your advice was right on target!...One thing I was request in the future....that the students be given a notebook or cookbook of ALL of the recipes that are taught in the school, or at least told to bring a tablet to take precise notes. We cooked each morning, sat together with the chef for lunch, wine from the vineyard and lots of conversation (usually until about 3:30 or so) then has a little time to ourselves before a fabulous dinner. It could not have been any better! Many thanks, Melanie B., TX

Our stay has exceeded all our expectations! As you promised, the Auberge is gorgeous. Everyone has been so gracious and friendly. Even the trepidations among us are up to their elbows a la cuisine, thanks to Chef Jean-Louis. We even had a warm afternoon by the pool. Thanks for another winner! Anne S.

The location was a place of beautiful perfection in a remote, wild countryside. The staff and chef treated uslike royalty and did all they could to make us comfortable and have a great time. The chef was fun, easy-going, easy to understand and taught us a lot. I loved the trip to the market to buy food to prepare. Making typical Provencal dishes was culturally interesting as well as learning the steps. The wine making tour and wine tasting were excellent and in great depth. The olive mill tour was disappointing - they didn't seem to expect us - but I'm glad we got to see it. The owner of the Chateau was so gracious and interested in setting high standards. We enjoyed meeting him and his warm kindness. Leta D. Alexandria, LA

I just wanted to let you know that Chris and I had a wonderful time at Chateau de Berne last week. Mayung took very good care of us as ourhostess, and Jean-Louis is great! And of course the location is absolutely beautiful, as you know. We were made to feel very welcome the whole time we were there. I'm a few months pregnant, and Mayung did a great job of juggling our schedule so that I got some rest when I needed it but we also managed to fit in a lot of activities (including a visit to the market, a winery tour and wine tasting and a visit to a local abbey as well as some shopping on our own). And the cooking lessons were very well done. Chris and I were the only students (and in truth, Chris was the only one really cooking with Jean-Louis -- my job was to take notes and pictures!), so it felt like a one-on-one tutorial. Jean-Louis is a patient teacher and he did a good job of explaining everything he was doing. As the week progressed, Chris took a more and more active role in the food preparation, and the hands-on approach was very educational too. Everyone at Chateau de Berne was warm and friendly, and they really did make us feel very welcome there. This program was Chris's birthday present (his 40th) and I'm very pleased with how well it worked out! Thank you and kind regards, Katie P., UK

This cooking vacation was fabulous. I was very satisfied with the service of the International Kitchen. The Chateau de Berne was perfect. The service was outstanding and bilingual. The accommodations were luxurious. The cooking classes had the right mixture of learning new techniques and delicious food. Chef Nouveau was a knowledgeable teacher and approachable. I would highly recommend this cooking vacation package. Danette G, WA

Staff at the Chateau de Berne were exceptionally friendly. The location was a paradise in Provence-an oasis actually. Amenities were charming. The chefs were outstanding!!! They challenged us with terrific recipes and ensured that we felt confident in our techniques and handling of the food/ingredients. I felt pampered. The chefs paid extra attention to the food that we enjoyed at supper would be uniquely different from our lunch that we prepared earlier that day. The chefs were extremely knowledgeable a provided many culinary ideas for ingredient substitutions. I would attend a class every year, if possible! Truly the experience was a dream!!! Thank you for this special memory. (Merci) I did not notice information in the packet about needing a translator. I assumed the class was taught in English (sorry). I appreciated the translator. My only criticism: A couple times the translator was not present at the class and for a local tour. What if my companion did not speak French? Neither one of us would have had translation. Not sure if we were supposed to plan this in advance with the organizers. Please note, this did not negatively impact the experience. I still loved all of it!! Vanessa N., CA

The accommodations and friendly staff far exceeded my expectations. In fact, I feel that your website did the chateau and grounds an injustice in their description! The staff was exceptional....helpful with recommendations of neighboring towns to visit, attentive to detail (right down to where each of us sat at the table each night and whether we had coffee or tea in the morning), and genuine interest in making sure we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Two concerns: 1. The chef did not speak English well. In fact, he was surprised the first day in class when we answered "no" to his question "parlez vous Francais?". He did bring in a member of the staff to help translate day 2 and 3, but the website clearly stated that he spoke English and that he spoke it well. 2. The itinerary mentioned tours of the winery as well as an olive oil mill. These were not organized when we arrived but they did schedule the winery tour upon our request. Jennifer M., IL

We loved the Chateau de Berne venue. The lodging and staff were just outstanding. The cooking classes were very informative, and the meals in the restaurant were superlative. We would go back again, and would highly recommend to anyone interested in the region and the Provence cooking experience. The International Kitchen staff was wonderful. Nancy W., TX

The Chateau de Berne was exquisite from the grounds to the restaurant to the pool, etc. The rooms were simple but tasteful and completely adequate with TV and air conditioning. Late June in Provence is HOT so air conditioning is a must. The staff from top to bottom were incredibly kind and helpful, and most spoke English very well. The chef, Sebastian Nouveau, did not speak much English but translators were always present when we were cooking. It was a pleasure to meet a couple from the area who served as translators, plus we also enjoyed meeting a vacationing couple from Seattle and we will be keeping in touch. The cooking experience was thorough in that we learned many techniques and the chef made sure that everyone in the class participated. He also provided us with the recipes so that we could try to reproduce them at home. The resulting three course meals were delicious and dining with the chef and others in the class allowed us to further get to know everyone. We also enjoyed our trips to the market, ceramics museum, olive oil factory and wine cellar. This is a vacation that I would highly recommend to anyone! When I first called I was vacillating between two trips in Provence and I am extremely grateful to Karen, who vouched that Chateau de Berne was a superb site. Paulette E., NY

This was a trip with my teenage daughter who is learning French. It was extraordinary for us to spend this kind of relaxed time together. While we both didn't want to cook the entire time, you were willing to tailor it to suit our needs. We cooked one day and had a wonderful time as she spoke French with the chef. On other days we went on outings, including a museum. The Chateau de Berne, where we stayed, was exquisite and welcoming. Deborah R.

This was way beyond expectations. The staff were all so wonderful and caring and Jamie, our chef, was terrific. Again, we learned so much from him and he was so patient and fun (lots of laughs). Our room was very glamorous with lovely amenities. The food - GLORIOUS. I would say this was one of the finest experiences of my life. Thank you. Kris L., CT

The Chateau de Berne was beautiful. The staff and rooms were wonderful and did everything to make our stay enjoyable. However we learned nothing at the cooking school. The chef, Jeremy, was delightful but I am not sure he was prepared. We had a group of 6 who traveled together. None of us are able to make one French dish. The itinerary stated that the cooking school was from 10 to 2 each day. In reality it was from 9:30 or 10 to 11:30. We did eat what was made for lunch around 12 noon each day but the total school time was less than 2 hours a day. We learned to dice, chop, and cut but never saw how things were put together, never saw how they were cooked, at what temperature, or for how long. We asked for recipes several times but never received any. I can make a tomato and peach salad but nothing else even though I tried to write what we were doing. We asked to learn how to make creme brulee. The chef mixed it and took it away. We had it for dessert but never heard how long it cooked, how to flame the top, etc. The cooking school was very disappointing and I cannot recommend it to anyone - especially for the price that we paid. The cooking school was to be the highlight of our travels but unfortunately it was not. I think that a detailed itinerary should be developed and the participants should be able to follow it. The chef should also know what has been advertised/promised to the participants. An actual book of recipes, tips, etc. for French cooking should be presented to the participants so that they can at least follow along, make notes, and have something to take home and use. I realize that the itinerary is flexible but to cut out more than 2 hours a day of something that we paid for was unfair to the participants. Barbara and Dennis S., PA [Note from The International Kitchen: This was the same trip as Steve and Macrina G.]

Exceeded our expectations in every way. Exceptional hotel, dining, staff and hotel rooms. The actual cooking experience exceeded our expectations. The chef was there every day with personal advice. The daily lunch was terrific and the special evening dinners great. The trip to the town market was a great time. You were really sad to leave. There may be a better deal than this and when you find it let us know. [Regarding The International Kitchen staff:] First class operation. Stephen & Macrina G., VA

We really enjoyed Chef Louie - very personable and very knowledgeable - made everyone feel very welcome. Visits to olive mill and market were also very fun and informative Chateau de Berne is a lovely property and staff was great - they helped us with restaurant reservations in the area and a driver into Saint Tropez for dinner. [Regarding the cooking vacation packet:] Yes, it was very thorough. [Regarding The International Kitchen staff:] The Chicago staff was terrific - could not have done anything more to help us with the trip. Pamela R., FL

We really enjoyed the venue that was recommended to us by Peg. All the staff members there were super friendly and professional. We felt well taken care of during our stay there. Yes, very appreciative for all the staff taking the time to answer all our back and forth questions and providing great recommendations. They even sent us a email reminder a few days before our trip should we needed anything from the venue or them. Very professional services! June, CA
