Fred Plotkin to Lead Exclusive Opera Tours for The International Kitchen
Fred Plotkin, World-Renowned Opera Expert and Bon Vivant, to Lead Exclusive Tours at the Metropolitan Opera for The International Kitchen
November 27, 2007 – (Chicago, IL)
Fred Plotkin, known for his regular appearances on Metropolitan Opera broadcasts and the author of “Opera 101: A Complete Guide to Learning and Loving Opera,” will lead two tour-seminars in New York during the Met’s spring season. Outstanding productions starring some of the world’s greatest singers, and private instruction from Plotkin will provide a total immersion in opera. Small groups offer the kind of exclusive experience most opera vacations cannot provide. Each tour will include four operas at Lincoln Center, deluxe accommodations, and four superb meals at New York’s finest restaurants.
March 7 to 11, 2008, operas will include Verdi’s “Otello,” starring Renee Fleming and Johan Botha; Benjamin Britten’s 20th century masterpiece, “Peter Grimes,” in a riveting new production starring Patricia Racette and Anthony Dean Griffey; Henry Purcell’s “King Arthur” in a staging by MacArthur ‘Genius Grant’ recipient Mark Morris; and the season premiere of Wagner’s “Tristan und Isolde” conducted by James Levine and starring Ben Heppner and Deborah Voigt in her very first American performance of Isolde. These are among the hottest tickets of the current season.
From May 13 to 17, 2008, there is a formidable line up of superstar singers. In four nights one can hear Placido Domingo, Natalie Dessay, Juan Diego Florez, Rene Pape, Susan Graham, Ramon Vargas and others in “The First Emperor” (composed specifically for Domingo by Tan Dun); Mozart’s final masterpiece, “La Clemenza di Tito”; Verdi’s towering “Macbeth”; and a new production of Donizetti’s brilliant “Daughter of the Regiment” including one of the great showstopping arias in all of opera.
Fred Plotkin has worked at more than 40 opera companies, including directing at La Scala (as a Fulbright Scholar) and five years as performance manager of the Metropolitan Opera. He has lectured often at Juilliard, the Smithsonian Institution and the Salzburg Festival.
The combination of the pleasures of opera and the table made these tours especially appealing to Karen Herbst, president of The International Kitchen (which has been, since 1994, the leading provider of culinary tours to Europe): “Discerning travelers are looking for a complete experience when they take a vacation. They want to have access to places they could not get to on their own, such as sold-out performances at the Metropolitan Opera and a table at the most in-demand restaurants where reservations are almost impossible to secure. And they want to learn, so we engaged Fred Plotkin, the most respected and in-demand opera educator there is.”
