Fred Plotkin’s approach to life is to try to live like a Renaissance Man in modern times. To the extent that anyone can achieve this goal, Fred has.
A native of New York but a citizen of the world, Fred is the author of nine books (and now writing a biography of Michelangelo), was the performance manager of the Metropolitan Opera and has directed opera at La Scala. In a Public Lives profile, Plotkin was described as “one of those New York word-of-mouth legends, known by the cognoscenti for his renaissance mastery of two seemingly separate disciplines: music and the food of Italy.”
Among his books are the best-selling Opera 101: A Complete Guide to Learning and Loving Opera and Classical Music 101: A Complete Guide to Learning and Loving Classical Music, both of which are considered the standard texts for learning these art forms. Other people know Fred for his peerless knowledge of Italian food and culture. He is the author of five Italian cookbooks and has been a finalist for the James Beard award, the Julia Child Cookbook award and the IACP cookbook award. His definitive Italy for the Gourmet Traveler received a new, entirely updated edition in May 2007 from Kyle Books.
Fred appears frequently on television and radio. He is known to millions of listeners worldwide through his regular appearances on the Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network and the Met’s transmissions on Sirius Satellite Radio. He has cooked frequently on the Television Food Network as well as “Live with Regis and Kathie Lee,” and morning programs throughout America. He was featured during NBC’s coverage of the winter Olympics in Turin in 2006 and is a very frequent guest on NPR and BBC radio.
A much-sought-after speaker, Fred has lectured in more than 40 universities in the US and Europe, on Crystal cruises and at most of the world’s major opera companies. Before joining us, he led very popular and highly-praised opera seminars and tours for Smithsonian Journeys. Learning opera from Fred Plotkin was listed as one of The 100 Best Vacations to Enrich Your Life, by Pam Grout (National Geographic Books; April 2007).
